The Kwando river rises on the central plateau of Angola on the slopes of Mount Tembo from where it slowly meanders down initially forming the border between Angola and Zambia and finally flowing through the neck of the Caprivi Strip dividing Botswana and Namibia. It continues in its marshy channel into the Linyanti swamp dotted with Alluvial Islands before turning east becoming the Chobe river eventually flowing into the Zambezi .
Its contribution to the flow of the Zambezi is however small except in occasional years when it floods excessively .
The Cuando system is known for its wild life and for most of its length the land either side is protected as game reserves or wild life management areas.
